Dr. Sean Tobin, Psy.D.

Dr. Tobin provides psychotherapy to adults, adolescents, and children, as well as couples and families.  He primarily uses relational psychodynamic techniques but integrates other modalities according to the needs and context of each client. The focus of therapy for Dr. Tobin is not just the current presenting difficulties that brought a person to therapy, but also the dynamics that initiate and perpetuate current struggles. He is passionate about bringing healing and transformation to the whole person, recognizing that “whoever wishes to heal man must see him in his wholeness and must know that his ultimate healing can only be God’s love” (Pope Benedict XVI).

Dr. Tobin seeks to foster an atmosphere and relationship where one’s mental health may support and improve one’s entire cognitive-emotional, spiritual, and relational life. A foundation of faith, hope, and love motivates and guides his clinical work, which is understood as a sharing in Christ’s ministry of compassion and healing. Through in-depth psychological training and study, he aims to bring a greater understanding and awareness of oneself as well as one’s desires and needs. He also aims to co-create the sacred space that allows for processing and exposure of conscious and sometimes unconscious dynamics that create barriers to love and flourishing.

He has a wide range of experience: from community mental health, outpatient/inpatient programs, drug rehabilitation, grade school to university counseling, as well as acute treatment in hospital and forensic settings.  He completed his doctorate in clinical psychology from Azusa Pacific University, a master’s in clinical psychology from Divine Mercy University, and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Franciscan University of Steubenville – while in a priestly discernment program.
